Malasyia government to issue Refugee ID to refugees
Wednesday, 03 February 2010 05:29

Malaysia government has been planning to issue temporary ID to refugees in their country. Malaysia local news paper the Star news had a headline about this issue and is attractive to both refugees and those who are concern about refugees in Malaysia. It said that the plan to issue refugee card from the government is to protect refugees from being arrested.

There are some 6,000 refugees and asylum-seekers from other countries, including some 3,000 Sri Lankans, 800 Somalis, 550 Iraqis and 550 Afghans.69,700 are from Burma (Myanmar), comprising some 17,400 Rohingyas from the Northern Rakhine State of Myanmar, 32,100 Chins, 4,100 Myanmar Muslims and the remaining are other ethnic minorities from Myanmar.

Thousands of refugees from Burma have left their own countries due to on going religious persecution and human rights abuses under the military regimes and sought asylum at UNHCR office in Kuala Lumpur. Most of refugees from Burma belong to ethnic minority such as Chin, Karen, Kachin, Shan, Arakaness and Mon.

A Burmese refugee in Malaysia expressed his feedback upon the news, "I doubt that this temporary ID or refugee ID would prevent us from the arrest or from the police who would stop us and extort ringgit from us. It may probably help us in Operasi - which mean operation against illegal migrants that usually took place at night. However, when we have UNHCR document they still can arrest us if they want because we are refugees and we have no rights to say anything even though UN card can prove that we are refugees. The ID issued would not be much different. It won't make refugees like any better and give refugees opportunity to get jobs and eventually become PR or citizens."

Refugees life in Malaysia have many other challenges apart from being arrested and deported to Thailand. Refugees have been facing problems in livelihood, moral corruptions, unusual and informal social life, lack of education and health care especially for children and women and so on. Moreover, being stateless have made refugees hopeless and brought them to sever depression.
